Santa Rosa, CA - On March 11th and 12th in Santa Rosa, 45 of the best female soccer players in Northern California joined together to train, play and be evaluated by coaches for the Elite Club National League Player Development Program event in hopes of getting invited to the ID2 National Team camp.
12 of them were from Mustang Soccer Club.
All players were selected based on their performance in ECNL Conference matches and national events by their coaches and coaches from the opposing teams.
On Saturday, the players were split into teams based on position to play in one morning training session and an 11v11 full match. Coaches from San Juan, MVLA, Santa Rosa United and Mustang were there to run the training sessions and evaluate the talent.
"The amount of talented players in our region is astronomical" said Mike Kelley, Mustang ECNL Director. "I have heard from the coaching staff who attended that our players showed as well as any."
On Sunday, the teams were regrouped into teams to play two matches in front of a group of as many as 30 college coaches who were there to get another glimpse of the best northern California has to offer. Coaches from Stanford, Vanderbilt, University of Arizona, Chico State, Boise State, Cal Poly, St. Mary's, USF, Sac State, Air Force and many more were treated to the high level matches.
"The energy of the players was great" said Michael Hoffert, Mustang U15-U19 Girls Director who coached team 3 through the weekend. "They were all so welcoming to each other and the coaching staff, all while fighting to be seen for the next level.”
Throughout the weekend the coaching staff met before and after the sessions and at lunch to discuss their evaluations. At the end of their time together, the coaching staff recommended 15 players from the region to the ECNL PDP committee to be see at the ID2 National Event in July.
