Become A Referee
We are always looking for new volunteer Parent Referees, and paid Grassroots Referees. It is a great way to enjoy the game, get some exercise, and earn some extra cash with flexible hours. Your involvement is critical to the players. Without a referee there are no games!
To be a Volunteer Mustang Parent Referee you will need to do two things:
-
Complete SafeSport online training. This is required for anyone involved in youth soccer.
-
Attend a 2-3 hour live or online training course that will allow you to referee your child’s match in the instance where there are no referees provided.
Parent referees are a very appreciated position, and a great start into refereeing, but please also consider taking the more advanced Licensed Referee training.
To be a paid Licensed (Grassroots) Referee you must be at least 13 years old and will need to take online training courses through the US Soccer Learning Center website that you can complete at your convenience. You will also need to attend a 3-hour field session to obtain your license that will allow you to referee recreational and competitive matches.
• Mustang Soccer refs are among the highest paid in our area.
• Monthly and fall season bonuses based on your game count.
• Reimbursement of registration fees for new refs who work sufficient games.
• $500 team tournament fund, if 5 people on team become refs and work sufficient games.
• Self-assign yourself to matches based on your personal schedule.
• New Mustang refs have the option to be in our mentor program and paired up with an adult ref.
• Mustang generally assigns 3 refs per game.
• Parents and their teenage child can sign up and work games together.
• Mustang provides continuous support and respect to their refs from the entire organization and coaches.
The US Soccer training season begins on July 1, and after obtaining your license it will last until Dec 31 of the following year. Dates for our Grassroots Referee field sessions are shown below. Please choose a date and click on the associated link to register. Links will be posted the first week of July. You will then be able to complete the required online assignments and attend the field training.
Below are links to the new referee field sessions.
Please sign up for the one field session that will work for your schedule.
There is approximately 8-9 hours of pre-work that needs to be completed prior to the session, so get started quickly. Also, mark your calendars for August 17-18 as that will be our Jamboree. This is the annual Rec Plus Tournament designed for new referees to get practice on real games with a mentor on each game. I look forward to seeing you out there.

U14 COMP Teams and higher can leverage a practice to get everyone on the team US Soccer certified as a referee. Parents/Coaches are also encouraged to participate. Please reach out to Justin Yarkin at jyarkin@gmail.com
In addition to the above training, on the 3rd weekend in August Mustang hosts a Rec+ tournament. These low stress games provide an opportunity for new referees to practice what they recently learned in a real game environment, with Mentors at every game. If you choose to sign-up for this tournament, you will be paid for these games.
Parents of Youth Referees
- If your child is a referee and you would like to support them, you can join the Youth Referee Support Program.
- You receive guidance and then can act as the adult representative, supporting your child and other youth referees as they are developing their skills. This is a de-escalation role used to provide support for youth referees while also being a representative from the club to provide feedback for any concerns.
