The Mustang Soccer family is thrilled that one of its own, Chris Wondolowski, broke the all-time Major League Soccer scoring record with an incredible four goals in the San Jose Earthquakes’ victory over the Chicago Fire on May 18 at Avaya Stadium.

Wondo needed one goal to tie Landon Donovan’s MLS record, but he didn’t stop there. He poured in three more to give him 148 for his remarkable MLS career. He was justly named MLS Player of the Week for the eighth time on May 20.

Those who watched the game play out were mesmerized

“Being around him all these years with the Quakes as a general manager, it gave me, my wife and the kids the chills,” said Mustang Director of Coaching John Doyle of Wondo’s recording-breaking performance. “It was awesome. I’m so proud of him from a personal side. From a soccer side, the things he’s been able to achieve are incredible: the goals, the MVP and the World Cup. The way he’s done it with class and humility, it’s been pretty cool.”

Admired by fans across the country and treasured in the Danville community, Wondo has deep Mustang Soccer roots. He played for Mustang from U-6 to U-16 and then had a small stint at U-19 before competing in college. His daughter Emersyn plays in the Mustang Juniors Academy program. Chris and his wife Lindsey have two young girls, also including Brynlee. Wondo’s dad, John, a former Cal soccer player, coached the Mustang Broncos and Chris’ brother, Stephen, a former MLS player with Houston Dynamo, coaches the Mustang 2004 Boys Elite.

John Wondolowski shared a message for his son after the record-breaking performance.

“I’m so proud of you and I’m so happy for you,” he said on a video by the Quakes.

Wondo’s longtime teammate and close friend Shea Salinas, who has assisted 14 of his goals, offered a fitting tribute to the Mustang and MLS legend.

“It’s just an honor to be part of what he’s done. He’s an incredible person, an incredible teammate, and an incredible goal-scorer, so it’s cool to be a part of it,” Salinas said.

Wondo, who scored 27 goals in the 2012 MLS season and is a two-time MLS Golden Boot winner, admitted he’d envisioned scoring a more spectacular recording-breaking goal. Then again, a goal’s a goal.

“I always pictured hitting a 30-yard blast going upper 90, didn’t really picture the goalkeeper dropping it and tapping it in, but I’ll take it. Honestly, I’m just having fun right now,” he said in a club release.

Wondo represents a tremendous coming-of-age story as the only American-born player to score more than 50 MLS goals after competing collegiately at a Division II school, Chico State. But with every clutch finish and landmark moment his legend grew. Stats aside, he always puts the team first.

Wondo's rise the fame has always been a family affair. His dad was there from the start. Consider that the Mustang Broncos squad, coached by John Wondolowski, produced Chris Wondolowski.John's Mustang Eagles also produced Steve Wondolowski, and his Mustang White Buffaloes produced Kyle Davies, who captained the U.S. U-20 World Cup team, played at Southampton and in MLS for five years. Davies starred at California High, much as Chris did with De La Salle.

So it's been an amazing adventure for the Wondolowski family, and the Mustang Soccer family too.
